WELCOME TO TAXIARCHES GREEK SCHOOL

Taxiarches School aims to provide progressive and comprehensive opportunities for students to develop language and cultural understanding through a program aligned with the Foundation classes all the way to our Accredited VCE Classes.

Our school is authorised as a VCE Single Study Language Provider by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) and undertakes an annual accreditation process with the VCAA via Community Languages Victoria, in relation to the VCE languages curriculum and other authorisation requirements.

Our teachers are highly qualified with many years’ experience and passionate in teaching the Greek language and culture. They are VIT registered or have completed the Methodology course or are enrolled in an accredited course.

All Staff hold current Working With Children checks and all staff undertake the Child Safety training required.

The School is approved as a Single Study Language Provider. VIT registered staff members are timetabled and teach the VCE.

A culture of “lifelong learning” is fostered at the School and the required hours of Professional Learning is met by all staff.

As of 2025 Alki Manasis, the founder of Manasis School of Greek Dance and Culture will take over our dance classes at school.

WHAT OUR STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT

The School prioritises student safety and wellbeing. Every individual is respected and valued. Open and frequent communication is encouraged amongst all members of the school community inclusive of staff, students, parents and community members.

A diachronic sense of Greek historical and cultural tradition within the context of an Australian identity is acknowledged and fostered. The sense of self-worth and of social responsibility are nurtured.

The school aims to provide progressive and cumulative opportunities for students to develop language and cultural understanding through a program aligned with the Victorian Curriculum F-10, Languages.

A learning program which complements the mainstream educational experiences. It does this through the provision of the Greek component of a curriculum which aims to develop Greek-English bilingual competencies to a high degree

A learner – cantered approach which creates opportunities to explore areas of specific interest; instruction which develops aspects of the spiritual as well as the intellectual side of the student

Progressive and flexible teaching methods predicated on the needs and interests of students

WHAT TAXIARCHES GREEK SCHOOL PROVIDES

About us

The Greek Orthodox Community of Mentone and Districts established the Taxiarches Greek School “The School” in 1961. The School has been providing Greek language and culture education ever since.

The School is one of the more established Greek schools and the very first one to win the right to be housed in proper classrooms within a mainstream school. The School’s successful application to the Cheltenham East Primary School to hold classes there became a model and a watershed moment for all community language schools in Victoria.

The Taxiarches School is proud of its innovative history in this and in other areas.

Incorporation

The School became incorporated at the behest of the Department of Education. The incorporation came through on 24/09/2021. Prior to this date, the School operated under the auspices of the Greek Orthodox Community of Mentone and Districts.

The official name of the school is now the Taxiarches Greek School of Mentone and Districts Inc. It operates independently from the Community.
